WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
1. The News Photographers Association of Canada 2006 Pictures of the Year Contest is open to WCNPA/ECNPA members only. However, it is not necessary to have been a member in 2006 to enter photographs taken in 2006 but a regional membership must be purchased by January 31, 2007 to enter the 2006 POY. Membership information can be obtained at http://www.ecnpa.com or http://www.wcnpa.ca.
2. There is an entry fee of $5/photo or picture story submitted. The entry fee for submission to the Photojournalist of The Year portfolio category is $10/photographer.

DEADLINE
1. All entries must be saved on CD or DVD and received by the POY committee no later than midnight (Central Standard Time) Wednesday, January 31, 2007. This deadline will be strictly enforced.

ENTRIES
1. All photographs, published or non-published must have been made between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006. The only exception to this rule applies to images from a longterm project which have been photographed over several years and so can be entered in the Picture Story category. A long-term project may only be entered once.
2. Pictures can be originally shot on film or made with a digital camera but all entries must be saved as RGB mode jpeg digital files and mailed or sent by courier with the appropriate entry fee to:

3. Image manipulation or alteration other than industry accepted darkroom techniques such as cropping, colour correction and tone adjustments (levels, curves or burning/dodging) is not allowed. Any entries that have been manipulated will be disqualified and prizes will be revoked. The only exception is when an image that has been manufactured or altered is submitted into the Illustration/Fashion category.
4. Entries must be from a single still camera frame. Video frame grabs are not eligible.
5. A photographer may enter up to five (5) images per category to a maximum of twenty (20) total entries. A Picture Story entry is considered one entry regardless of the number of images that make up the Picture Story. A portfolio submission for the Photojournalist/Student Photographer of The Year is separate and does not count towards the maximum number of entries.
6. You may not enter the same image in two categories. However, there is one exception. An entrant may enter an image in another category if it has been included in a Picture Story. For example, submission of a picture in Picture Story and again in Portrait/Personality. 7. Judges will not reclassify entries. Entrants must edit and place their work in the appropriate category.
8. The judging panel has the right to not designate awards.
9. The decisions of the contest judges and committee are final.
10. Entries will not be returned. By submitting entries entrants agree that submissions can be published in print and electronic formats for NPACPOY promotional purposes, ie. images may be used in a proposed traveling exhibition, NPAC website, and for future NPACPOY promotional material.
11. Three nominees will be selected from most categories and announced prior to the awards banquet on March 15/07. The three winners (first and two runners-up) will be announced at the 2007 WCNPA Conference Awards Banquet in Vancouver, April 27-29/07. The names of the Photojournalist of The Year and Student Photographer of The Year will not be released prior to the awards banquet.
12. DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: January 31, 2007
13. Deadlines will be strictly enforced.

PREPARING YOUR SINGLE PHOTO ENTRIES
A digital POY requires entrants to strictly follow certain guidelines when sending their entries into the competition. Contest organizers need all the entries to be alike in terms of file type, size, aptioning and filename style in order to manage and sort through all of the images entered by the membership. Please take the time to read and follow these file requirements when preparing your entries. Picture files not meeting these requirements may be disallowed from entering the competition.
1. Create a new folder named (Your Name)NPACPOY, eg. Peter Parker NPACPOY, on your computer’s hard drive. All of your finished images will be placed into this folder.
2. Set up your images using the following

DIGITAL FILE SPECIFICATIONS:
A. Resolution: 300 DPI.
B. Image Size: 12 inches, width or height, whichever is longest. If you do not have the file size we request, then submit the largest you can — but do not interpolate.
C. File type: jpeg
D. Be sure to append each file with: .jpg
E. JPG compression: 9 or higher.
F. Colour Mode: use RGB mode.
G. Images should not have borders.
3. We recommend finishing your entries using Photoshop and then get them ready for the NPACPOY competition by writing captions in Photoshop(PS) or PhotoMechanic(PM) and umbering them as a group.
4. Each picture must have a caption. Try to keep the caption brief and 25 words or less. Open the ‘File Info’(PS) area under the ‘File’(PS) menu or ‘IPTC info’(PM) and compose a caption in the ‘Description’(PS) or ‘Caption’(PM) field. Be sure to exclude locations, city names, province names, your name and the publication’s name in your captions.
5. The image name is recorded in the ‘Document Title’(PS) or ‘Object Name’(PM) field. Please pay close attention to the following steps. You must follow a specific naming style and when saving the image, include the “.jpg” extension. Each picture must have the following format for its ‘Document Title’(PS) or ‘Object Name’(PM): (CATEGORY CODE)(PHOTOGRAPHER’S 3 INITIALS)(entry number).

Use one of the following category codes for each entry:
PY - PHOTOJOURNALIST OF THE YEAR
SN - SPOT NEWS
GN - GENERAL NEWS
FE - FEATURE/ENTERPRISE
SA - SPORTS ACTION
SF - SPORTS FEATURE
PS - PICTURE STORY
PP - PORTRAIT/PERSONALITY
PI - PICTORIAL
IF - ILLUSTRATION/FASHION
SY - STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Use your three initials and count each entry up to a maximum of 20 to complete each file name. For example, the ‘Document Title’(PS) or ‘Object Name’(PM) for Peter James Parker’s first entry, a sports action image, would look like this: SAPJP01.jpg

6. ANY OTHER FIELDS IN THE FILE INFO AREA MUST BE BLANK. To summarize, the only areas to have type in them are the ‘Description’(PS) or ‘Caption’(PM) and the ‘Document Title’(PS) or Object Name’(PM).
7. Now you are ready to save your entry as a jpeg to the new folder you created earlier named (Your Name)NPACPOY. Save your picture using the same filename recorded in its ‘Document title’(PS) or ‘Object Name’(PM) field. Save the image as a standard jpeg, minimum level 10 and make sure the filename has the ‘.jpg’ extension included. Using the above example, Peter James Parker would then have a jpeg of at least 1.5MB in size saved in his “Peter Parker NPACPOY” folder named SAPJP01.jpg
8. When you have resized, captioned and saved all your entries using the required filename format, burn them to a CD or DVD. Send them by courier or mail to the NPACPOY committee at:

9. When entry is received an email confirmation will be sent to each entrant.

PREPARING YOUR PICTURE STORY ENTRIES
Picture Story entries MUST be presented as a single jpeg file. The finished file is fairly easily produced in three steps.
A. Create an 11 inch X 17 inch (300 dpi) black canvas in Photoshop, on your tool palette, set your background color to black. Then go to the ‘file’ menu, select ‘New’. Name the file Picture
Story Layout 1. Make the width 11 inches, the height 17 inches (or vice versa, which ever you prefer) and the resolution 300 pixels/inch. The mode should be set to ‘RGB Color’. This should create a black photo that will measure 11 inches X 17 inches on your desktop.
B. Open all the images that make up your Picture Story entry and resize.
C. Copy and paste each one into the 11X17 inch virtual black canvas. Save the collection of images as a single jpeg using the required filename format.

1. Edit your images to reveal a story line or point of view.
2. An entry must consist of no more than twelve (12) images.
3. Choose your lead photo for your Picture Story and resize the image to your preference at 300 dpi.
4. Copy and paste your image into the new 11x 17 black canvas.
5. Your image should now appear on top of the black area. You can move the image by selecting the ‘move’ tool on the tool palette to position the image. Resize if necessary.
6. Continue with the next image you want to layout on your black canvas repeating steps 3 to 5 until you have all your Picture Story images pasted and in position.
7. Under the Layer menu, choose ‘Flatten Image’. This melds all the layers or ‘pasted photos’ into one allowing you to save your layout as a jpeg using the required filename format described earlier.
8. No text should appear on your Picture Story layout. All caption information should appear in the ‘Description’(PS) or ‘Caption’(PM) field. Try to keep your caption brief and less than 40
words.
9. If you wish to enter a single image from your picture story in any of the single categories please make sure that the file is named appropriately as no two entries can have the same file name.
